Flying for the first time can be incredibly stressful and a bit scary. It can be hard preparing for something when you don’t know what to expect or how to make it to your destination on time and stress free.
Whether your flight is just an hour to hop to a new city or a long-haul 12 hour flight there are a few tips and tricks to make your first flight a calm one.
Here are my tips to having a stress free first flight!
No matter the airport or time of year there are always going to be lines in security or to check your bag. Arriving a few hours early means you can relax in line maybe even peruse a duty free shop or two and make it to your gate with plenty of time to spare. If there is room you may even be able to get an upgrade on your seat!
Wear Slip On Shoes
In very few airports do you get to keep your shoes on when going through security so unless you are lucky enough to get the TSA Pre-Check on your ticket or have global entry then walking around shoe-less in the airport is a fact of flying. There is nothing that stresses me out more than trying to lace up my shoes back on, getting my carry-on, and trying avoid the throngs of people trying to do the same thing. Wearing shoes that are easy to slip in and out of means I’m able to grab everything and go about my business. On a related note it’s also important to wear socks (unless you enjoy walking around airport security barefoot).
Bring Snacks With You
I don’t know about you but something about being on a plane makes me hungry (just me?) but the airport definitely jacks up the prices and I have never been the biggest fan of airplane food. There is nothing worse than being a hangry passenger so plan a bit ahead and bring your own (non-liquid) snacks with you to the airport to avoid the price surges and unsatisfactory airplane meals.
I cannot stress the importance of staying hydrated on a plane! The air is constantly being recycled during your flight drying everything from your skin to your throat out. Flights have a plethora of beverages at your disposal so make sure you drink up throughout the flight. Having to go to the bathroom also serves as a great reminder to stand up and stretch your legs!
